Rules & Regulations

USA TRIATHLON:

The Great Atlantic Ocean Triathlon and Fitness Sprint are sanctioned by USA Triathlon. USAT rules will be in effect during the event. These rules will be reviewed at the pre-race meeting described below. This is a non-drafting race. Please direct any rules questions and/or protests to the USAT officials on site. Protests of penalties must be filed with the Race Director within 60 minutes after the protesting individual finishes the race. See their web site for additional info at www.usatriathlon.org.

Race Numbers

  1. Registration will mark your body with race number at check-in on race morning. A number for your bike will be provided in the race packet and must be used.
  2. Runner's numbers are also in race packet and must be worn in FRONT of the body at the run finish.

Dropping Out

If you drop out of the race, it is IMPERATIVE that you notify a race official immediately and return your timing chip to the marshal.

*No iPods and earphones! 

*No breaststroke kick in high traffic swim lanes.  Please move to the far side of the buoys if you need this technique.  We like the side and backstroke if you need an alternate stroke.

*No drafting out on the bike course!

*Keep right, pass left on both the bike and run.

 

Swim

  1. Great Atlantic starts 6:45 sharp.  Fitness Sprint starts at 7:10 am.

  2. Each swimmer must wear official cap as provided in race packet-no exceptions or substitutions.

  3. Wet suits will be permitted according to USAT regulations.

  4. The course will be patrolled by water safety certified personnel in safety vessels. Medical personnel will be on shore.

  5. Swimmers may hang on to a buoy, boat or a pontoon to rest without disqualification so long as they are not pushed or propelled in any way by.

  6. Relay swimmers tag off to team cyclists in the designated relay team area in the bike corral.

  7. Swim course closes at 7:55 am. Anyone not finished at this time will be escorted  from the water and disqualified.

Bike

  1. Each competitor is responsible for having his/ her bike in proper working condition. Bike support will offer a complimentary safety check on bikes either Saturday at time of packet pickup or Sunday morning. This is a quick inspection of the bike and is not meant as a guarantee that the bike is in proper working condition. Bike support will inspect for bar end plugs. You MUST have bar end plugs to compete. We will have an inventory of bar end plugs but can not guarantee we will be able to provide them to everyone in need of them.

  2. All cyclists are responsible at all times for their own safety and for compliance with traffic laws on the cycling course and are solely responsible for the consequences of any infraction.

  3. Cyclists are expected to heed directions and instructions of race officials.

  4. ALWAYS ride on the right side of the road, and Pass left.  Crossing the center line is not allowed. Take care making corners at high speed. They will be swept, but use caution.  

  5. HELMETS are required during the bike race. They must be on your head with chin strap fastened securely any time you are on your bike before, during and after the race. This is a new USAT ruling and violation is grounds for disqualification.

  6. RELAYS if applicable: Cyclists must return to the designated relay team area to tag off with the runner.

  7. No individual support vehicles or assistance by anyone is allowed.

  8. There are NO aid stations on the bike course.

  9. NO DRAFTING OFF ANOTHER BICYCLE or motor vehicle is allowed. Drafting is defined as the maintenance of a static position to the rear (within four bike lengths) or to the side (within 3 feet) of another cyclist or vehicle.

  10. Exemptions to the drafting rule are: (a) when passing a cyclist if done within 15 seconds, (b) when the cyclist is required to reduce speed for safety reasons (e.g. weather, traffic control) or to receive aid, and (c) on curves or turns of 90 degrees or more.

  11. Bike course closes at  9am.

Run

  1. Runners stay right, pass left.  The boardwalk is open to the public.  It will not be busy, but be careful out there, especially navigating around concession stand areas.

  2. Runners must wear official race number on the course at all times. Numbers must be placed in FRONT of the body. Runners must make sure their official printed race numbers are visible to timing volunteers at the finish line.

  3. No support or escort runners are allowed. This is an individual event. Receiving help results in disqualification.

  4. There will be two water stations on the run

  5. The running course closes at 9:55 pm. Police protection ends at this time.

Transition Areas

  1. Only registered racers and official race personnel are allowed in transition areas.

  2. Security will be provided, but race organization is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged equipment. Please remove your bike and equipment A.S.A.P.

  3. Before the race transition will close at 6:45am. All athletes (other than relay bikers and runners) must clear transition and make their way to the swim start.

  4. After the race transition area closes at 10:30am. Please have all bikes and equipment removed prior to this time.

General Rules

  1. No one is allowed in the transition area, except registered racers and transition area officials.

  2. Course marshals and the head official have the ultimate and final authority to remove a participant from the race if the participant has violated rules of the race. Medical personnel have ultimate and final authority to remove a participant from the race, if, in their judgment, the participant is physically incapable of continuing the race without sustaining physical damage or loss of life.

  3. USA Triathlon rules reign.

  4. Protest must be filed at the finish line in accordance with USA Triathlon.

  5. Please pace yourself, maintain hydration, and keep health and safety in their proper perspective.

  6. Timing splits are as follows:

    1. Swim: at exit from water at beach

    2. Transition time: swim to bike

    3. Bike: at exit from transition area (start of run course)

    4. Transition time: bike to run

    5. Run: at finish line

  7. No participant shall wear headphones or any sound producing device during the race (results in disqualification).

  8. HAVE A FUN, SAFE, ENJOYABLE RACE AND THANK A VOLUNTEER!

Timing

The Event will be timed by Jersey Shore Race Timing, utilizing the Winning Time computer chip timing system to accurately time and quickly provide day of race results. You must wear the timing band on your ankle during the race to receive your finishing time and all splits. Any participant not returning their issued timing chip at the end of the event will be charged a $20 chip replacement fee.  If you lose your chip, stop and notify the next marshal you see on the course and continue the race, subject to disqualification if relative splits do not match athletes past performance.
