Race Day Schedule & Packet Info
LAVA GOES RETRO
We have a few athletes going the retro look for Father’s Day. I hope this becomes a tradition at LavaMan. It will no doubt add to the fun for 2010.
Retro athletes are still AG award eligible. Regardless of how you finish, we’ll bring you up on the podium for a picture, a gift, and announce the throw-back athlete’s results. A great family photo op!
It’s not too late to go “retro” if you can find that vintage gear or jersey. Just email us ahead of time so we don’t miss you at awards for a photo.

SWIM WAVE STARTS
Wave #1 6:50 AM: Male athletes 39 and under. We have some females biking 22+ who will be joining this wave to keep the multi-loop bike course a little more even-flow.
Wave #2 6:54 AM: Male athletes 40 and over, plus ALL CLYDESDALES.
Wave #3 6:58 AM: Women
All athletes are to be on shore at the swim start at 6:45AM.
Swim warm-up ends at 6:40AM at the swim START area, not the swim finish beach. If you miss swim warm up, please try to be front and center when your wave is released so you can get a few minutes of stroke in, and find your breathing rhythm.
A few very brief words and then we load wave 1. There is not much room on the ramp into the water, so please hustle it up. Each wave has 4 minutes of water time before the gun.
Depending on how you line up, you will be able to stand at or near the swim start. However, because of the high tide conditions, the water will soon be about 6 ft. for the remainder of the swim.

MOST OF THE PORT-A-JOHNS WILL BE AT THE SWIM START. CARRY YOUR WETSUIT DOWN, AND ARRIVE THERE EARLY TO GET YOURSELF ORGANIZED.
YOU SHOULD BE WALKING UP TO THE SWIM START FROM TRANSITION NO LATER THAN 6:25 AM TO WARM UP, AND NO LATER THAN 6:15 AM IF YOU PLAN A BATHROOM STOP. IT IS A 5 MINUTE WALK.

BIKE MOUNT AND DISMOUNT HAS BEEN REVISED FROM 2009 VERSION AND CURRENT WEB PAGE DIAGRAM
LavaMan bike mount and dismount was always tight. We recently came up with a very good solution.
For 2010, we will be using the large northern end of the beach parking lot, and mounting and dismounting in the southern beach parking lot.
When you mount the bike in this parking lot, use caution as you exit onto the closed shoulder which brings you to your first loop through West Point Isle. The angle is not great, so forget about using the parking lot for a launch of which NASA would be proud. As this will be a congested area, you will be instructed to slow down, and please keep it safe.
For dismount, this means you will SLOW down on the far right Bay Ave shoulder when you approach transition (watch for cones and signage). But, instead of dismounting on the tight shoulder with bikers whizzing by, you will turn right into the parking lot and pedal just a bit up toward transition where you will dismount.
For the athletes jumping on the bike needing to get into your shoes, you must pedal the first 300 yards up and over the small causeway into West Point Island before you can attempt that maneuver. There is simply not enough room until then. Blocking will be enforced in this critical part of the bike course. So, please keep your head up until you are into West Point Island where there is a little more room on the course.
Check out these overviews, so you understand how the bottom driveway is now our main entrance and exit on the bike. We will have marshals to help you navigate through.

You only go through West Point Island once! The 2nd and 3rd laps go straight and do not turn into West Point Island.

*****************************************************************
REMEMBER…3 LOOPS ON THE BIKE. THE FIRST LOOP IS YOUR LONGEST LOOP, AS THE COURSE TAKES YOU INTO WEST POINT ISLAND, THEN DEPOSITS YOU BACK ONTO BAY AVE. FROM THERE YOU PROCEED TO FINISH YOUR FIRST LOOP, THEN REMAIN ON BAY AVENUE FOR LAPS 2, AND 3.
HINT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TROUBLE COUNTING LAPS….
…DON”T COUNT 1 UNTIL YOU ARE BACK AT THE GAZEBO, (or north end of transition). WHEN YOU SEE IT FOR THE 3RD TIME, YOU ARE DONE!!!! MOVE OVER RIGHT. THEN GET INTO THE BIKE DISMOUNT LANE AND SLOW DOWN TO ENTER THE PARKING LOT WHILE STILL PEDALING THE BIKE. FOLLOW INTO PARKING LOT. WATCH FOR OTHER RIDERS!
The secret to this fast bike course staying safe, is no secret at all… Stay right, pass left at all times.
DO NOT RIDE UP ON SOMEONE ON THE RIGHT, ESPECIALLY AT BIKE MOUNT AND DISMOUNT! ALWAYS STAY RIGHT, PASS LEFT.

SPECTATORS
With the new bike mount/dismount and run exit, the beach is now a GREAT place to watch much of the race. From the beach, your fans can watch your swim exit and transition. Then they can stay put and see plenty of action, or move over to the Gazebo area for more up-close viewing of you on the bike.
With this new T1/T2 and mount setup, LavaMan is now perhaps the best venue in our lineup for spectator viewing. The beach has a playground to keep kids entertained. The gazebo lawn is also a treasure for sharing a post-race blanket or bench for refreshment and awards. That is where awards will be.
LOCAL LAW FOR YOU AND YOUR PET
Please remember, the Lavallette police prohibit using the median on Bay Blvd. for event viewing. Only approved photographers with ID can use this area. This will be strictly enforced by Lavallette police.
IMPORTANT: NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED ON THE BEACH OR IN THE GAZEBO AREA PER LAVALLETTE ORDINACE. If you are bringing your pet, the finish line area or Bay Blvd. sidewalks are your only options. If you are near the curb, please keep your dog on a very short leash.

RANDOM NOTES:
-Water temp on 6/14 was 75 degrees.
-We need some volunteers to help keep order and direct athletes on the course. If you have someone in mind who can lend a hand, please let us know.
-There will be two official water stops on the run. DO NOT STOP THERE ON THE BIKE FOR A REFILL! Local families in Lavallette often supplement as well.
-Weather is expected to be sunny and hot. Stay hydrated in the days leading up to the race. With the predicted heat on race day, avoiding alcohol the night before is a good idea.
-Running with a hat can help keep you cool. Use the water stops to regroup if you need a little breather.
